The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a new online platform for a capacity-building course called Open Science 101, powered by the open-source Open edX® learning management system (LMS).
Designed to support NASA’s wider Transform to Open Science initiative, the programme aims to equip 20,000 scientists and researchers with practical open science skills through a scalable and engaging online learning experience.
The Goal
NASA required a platform capable of delivering the high-quality educational experience expected from one of the world’s leading scientific organisations. The project also needed to be developed and launched within a demanding three-month timeline.
Key requirements included:
- Strict sequential progression through course modules
- Support for multiple learning pathways, including full and fast-track options
- Robust analytics and learner tracking
- Digital credentials to recognise achievement
- A scalable infrastructure capable of supporting thousands of learners
The Solution
NASA selected the Open edX® platform to power the Open Science 101 programme because it provided all the required functionality while offering the flexibility and scalability needed for long-term growth.
The programme included five interactive modules containing 25 lessons developed in Articulate Rise 360 and integrated into the Open edX® platform using SCORM. Guided progression and sequential unlocking ensured learners mastered concepts before advancing through the course, while configurable course structures supported both full-course and fast-track learning pathways.
To monitor engagement and performance, NASA used the platform’s real-time analytics and reporting tools, giving administrators valuable data-driven insights into learner progress. Credly digital badges were also integrated with assessment outcomes, allowing participants to earn and share recognised digital credentials upon completion.
The course experience was further enhanced with rich interactive elements including quizzes, drag-and-drop activities, and multimedia content. Despite the ambitious scope of the project, the Open edX® platform enabled NASA to successfully launch the programme within just three months.
Key Takeaway
By combining Articulate Rise 360 content authoring with the Open edX® platform’s robust delivery infrastructure, NASA created a learning programme that is scalable, engaging, and highly effective.
The project demonstrates how the Open edX® platform can support large-scale education initiatives while maintaining flexibility, learner engagement, and measurable outcomes.
